Why is a Health Savings Account (HSA) called triple tax-advantaged?

The Health Savings Account (HSA) paired with an eligible High-Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) is the single most tax-sheltered vehicle in the entire U.S. tax code, offering three distinct layers of tax exemption: (1) Tax-Deductible Contributions: Money goes in pre-tax, reducing your gross income (and when contributed via payroll deduction, avoids 7.65% FICA taxes as well). (2) Tax-Free Compound Growth: Interest, dividends, and capital gains earned from investing your HSA funds are 100% tax-free. (3) Tax-Free Withdrawals: Withdrawals used for qualified medical expenses at any age are never taxed. Furthermore, at age 65, the 20% penalty for non-medical withdrawals disappears, allowing you to use it for ordinary living expenses like a Traditional IRA.
